Millennials make up a crucial segment of our current workforce. Love them or hate they you’ll probably need to hire them. As a restaurateur, you must understand who your potential employees are, and what they can gain by working in your business. You must approach hiring with a clear, concise action plan in order to staff a successful restaurant.
In Need of Steady Work and Workers
Pew Research Millennials are the largest generation in the U.S. workforce. More than one-third of Americans in the workforce are millennials, with a total of 56 million either working or looking for work. For an industry facing a worker shortage crisis, now is not the time to be picky.
Restaurant jobs make up two of the top three most popular jobs for millennials. The industry has added middle class jobs at four times the pace of the national economy since 2010, according to research by the National Restaurant Association’s chief economist, Bruce Grindy.
Trends and Service
Millennials are the driving force behind many recent developments in the restaurant industry. They have a strong connection to convenience, are poised to have more spending power than the baby boomer generation, and eat at restaurants more than any other generation. While this generation may have a bad reputation as employees (earned or otherwise) they just might be your best customers. If you can bring some of the same fun to your employees you do to your customers you may find Millenials are your best staff.
Quality over Quantity
Sociologists define the millennial generation as the most educated in Western history, the most technologically savvy, and are civic oriented. Hiring millennials, even in small numbers, brings these qualities into your business.
Restaurateurs know this business is all about trends. Having the next hot thing instead of manipulating current ones is what sets the great restaurants apart from their competition. Not only do great restaurants offer their customers appealing products, they also offer a familiar experience by retaining and developing the best talent in the market. Hiring millennials, therefore, offers your business a plethora of perks that are impossible to ignore.
