Subway to Overhaul Their Menu

Subway is about to undergo their biggest menu “refresh” in their history. The changes include upgraded ingredients, as well as new, updated, and returning sandwiches. The campaign called the “Eat Fresh Refresh” will debut in the chain’s 21,000 U.S. restaurants on July 13th.

Subway’s Struggles

The announcement comes just one week after the New York Times broke a story that Subway’s Tuna Sandwich did not contain tuna which itself came on the heels of a lawsuit in California. Subway maintains that their Tuna is in fact fish.

This newest scandal adds to the struggles Subway has experienced since 2014 when they began discontinuing their $5 footlong promotion. In 2015, their spokesman Jared Fogle was indicted traveling to pay for sex with minors and possessing child pornography. In 2020, Ireland’s Supreme Court Ruled that Subway’s bread was not bread. Over the past five years, the chain has had to close more than 5000 locations.

The changes to the menu will include 11 newly improved ingredients, four new sandwiches, and two returning favorites.

“This is one of the boldest changes in core menu in decades,” Trevor Haynes, president of North America at the Milford, Conn.-based sandwich giant. “It’s really the beginning of a multi-year journey.”

Not only is Subway making changes to their menu, but they are also rolling out “Subway Delivers” a delivery service provided by DoorDash that will be available from their app and website in select markets.

Subway has made a number of changes in recent years to try to invigorate its brand including revamped interiors, an investment in technology, and new sandwiches. This newest menu overhaul may provide the boost Subway needs to woo back their customers.
