Food trend predictions are coming in hot as 2018 approaches. As the typical consumers’ palette is ever-changing it is interesting to note the trends predicted for the upcoming year.
Veggies are in.
It is no surprise that greens are taking over plates. According to Baum & Whiteman, about 83 percent of U.S. consumers are adding plant-based foods to their diets to improve health and nutrition. Restaurants are adding tons of plant substitutes on their menus and are no longer separating them to “vegetarian” or “vegan” menus. Trendy items like barbecue jackfruit and cauliflower wings are on the rise and even your typical carnivore is starting to order them. Operators are treating plant based items as mainstream food items and this trend is expected to continue and grow in 2018.
2. Picture perfect items.
If you didn’t think this was already a trend it is about to explode in 2018. Bright colors, cheese pulls, and other Instagram worthy food items are what consumers will be looking for in 2018. Instagram is one of the most used tools by operators to generate buzz and bring in traffic. The rule of thumb is the more photogenic your food is the better it will do
3. Moringa- the new superfood.
Kale is so 2017. Moringa is in for 2018, and you better be ready. Moringa is a plant that has been praised for its health benefits and is very rich in healthy antioxidants. Moringa is made from dried leaves of the Moringa tree. We are anxiously waiting for 2018 to bring us Moringa lattes, pastries and much more.
4. Mazeman- the “new” ramen
The typical, beautiful ramen exploded in 2017 but 2018 is expected to bring in the trend of Mazeman. Mazemen is a no-broth ramen, displaying creative toppings that you mix together and then slurp up. The noodles are typically topped with usual japanese items, but we predict a push in unique toppings like at, Yuji Ramen in New York with hookmeat cooked bacon, onsen egg, mustard greens and bonito flakes.
