3 Important Reasons to Update Your Restaurant POS

Technology is changing at such a rapid pace these days it’s often difficult for many to keep up. And as luck often works, the moment you upgrade to a newer software version or device, there is another update right around the corner. This conundrum leads some to not update at all.

However, your restaurant POS is the heart of your operation. And to help keep your operation running smoothly, software vendors are hard at work keeping up with bug fixes, security patches and OS updates, not to mention new hardware and other technical changes. So if you’re in the camp that doesn’t always update, here are 3 important reasons to keep your restaurant POS system up-to-date:

  1. Cybersecurity

The single most important reason for updating your restaurant point-of-sale (POS) software is to guard against cyber attacks. Cybercriminals spend practically every waking hour searching for vulnerabilities to exploit in software, operating systems and even in Internet connected devices. In 2015, there were more than 1 million attacks against Internet users that compromised more than 400M identities, according to the 2016 Symantec Internet Security Threat Report. And in 2016, The Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center was exposed to a ransomeware attack that held the entire system hostage until a $17,000 ransom payment was made, according to a report released by Trend Micro. And in response to an increasing threat of cyber attacks Microsoft released an unprecedented 135 updates to its software in 2015 alone.

As a result, restaurant owners and operators need to remain diligent in protecting their data against the ever growing threat of cyber attacks. The best way to do this is to immediately install any updates and security patches from all software and hardware providers as soon as they are released. And ensure you are always running the most up-to-date version.

  1. Protects your investment

Regularly updating and even upgrading to newer software versions and hardware devices helps protect your restaurant POS investment. In addition to bug fixes and security patches, software vendors regularly release software updates to improve system performance and ensure compatibility with existing operating systems, APIs and encryption changes and hardware devices. Ignoring important updates can eventually render older software and hardware obsolete.

  1. Take advantage of new features

Software is always changing to keep up with changes in the marketplace. And whether it’s a new or more secure way to pay, more user-friendly reports, or other cool new features like table-side ordering, an up-to-date restaurant POS system will help owners operate their restaurant more efficiently and profitably.
